Over a dozen company sponsored teams participated in 12th annual Plywood Cup at Wascana Park on Canada Day.
To be a participant in the event there are a few stipulations – raise money, build a boat and make sure it floats.
“You have to be pretty much right on with your measurements and you’re only given a few tools so it’s tough,” Team YARA captain Tavis Reeder said.
One familiar team who took on the challenge was Global Regina.
“We had a number of meetings, we got here and we got to work,” Global News Morning anchor Teri Fikowski said.
Teams had only 90 minutes to put their blood sweat and tears into their masterpieces before they had to reveal their boats and put them to the test for the race.
Many teams fought to get across Wascana Lake and residents watched with agony as some failed, though cheers rang out as other teams prevailed.
Team YARA was the first to cross the finish line led by Reeder and they were also the team that raised the most money at $9,000.
“It supports two local charities, the Leader Post Raise-A-Reader program and Hospitals of Regina Foundation pediatric care,” Organizer Jason Gasmo explained.
Gasmo says they’re expecting to reach their $50,000 fundraising goal this year.
Also for the record, Global Regina finished third.
“We were really happy with the results and next year we’ll be that much better, and we’ll take first.” Global Regina reporter Christa Dao quipped.
