A Calgary man, who admitted to shooting and killing his mother, was sentenced to nine years in prison on Tuesday.
Andrew Murray shot his mother, Lois Murray, in the head while in her Ranchlands home on Thanksgiving Monday in October, 2013.
At his sentencing hearing earlier this year, Murray testified that he heard voices on that day telling him to kill his mother.
He was originally charged with first-degree murder, but was found guilty of manslaughter last June.
A forensic psychiatric assessment found Murray suffered an alcohol-induced psychotic disorder brought on by withdrawal at the time of the killing, according to an agreed statement of facts.
“You will recall that the best way you can honour your mother is by your sobriety. I wish you all the best with that,” Justice Beth Hughes said Tuesday.
With enhanced credit for the time he’s already served, Murray has already spent the equivalent of four years behind bars.
He will serve the next five years in jail and has been given a lifetime weapons ban.
