A Toronto police officer faces charges in connection with the death of a “suicidal” 19-year-old man earlier this year, the province’s Special Investigations Unit said Thursday.

The police watchdog agency said a man sought out the assistance of an officer in relation to the alleged suicide attempt of another man in Toronto’s High Park at around 2 p.m. on Feb. 2.

The SIU said the unnamed man was then pronounced dead at around 3:30 p.m. later that day.

Const. Kyle Upjohn faces one charge of criminal negligence causing death and one charge of failing to provide the necessaries of life in connection with the death. He is required to appear in a Toronto court on Aug. 4.

The agency said it would not be commenting further on the investigation, as it is before the court system.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
