Two Regina families received a free $10,000 renovation to their homes Monday to promote energy efficiency.

“In the winter time we freeze in the house. So, I’m very glad we got picked,” homeowner Ida Peters said.

Higher efficiency furnaces and better building insulation were installed as part of the Home Energy Legacy Program (HELP).

The partnership between SaskEnergy and Habitat for Humanity aims to cut 30 per cent off energy bills.

According to SaskEnergy’s spokesperson, Shannon Doka said the initiative is part of the company’s community investment efforts.

So far, 59 low-income families have benefited since the program began in 2011.

“It just brings new life into their existing homes,” Doka said.

“Habitat’s model has always been building new homes for families but this is allowing Habitat to go one step further and help existing homeowners stay in their homes longer.”
