A man accused of killing his mother and another woman in Calgary’s Coventry Hills neighbourhood in October 2015 has been ordered to undergo a 30-day psychiatric assessment, despite his objection.
The order came after a forensic psychiatrist who examined 30-year-old Emanuel Kahsai Monday testified the man might be psychotic and unfit to stand trial.

Dr. David Tano told the court Kahsai told him NASA was using alpha, beta and zeta rays to manipulate the brains of inmates, and then using information gathered from them to alter verdicts.
Kahsai’s mother, Selmawit Alem, and her friend, Julie Tran, were found in Alem’s home on Oct. 19, 2015. Both had been stabbed to death.
At the time, Alem had an emergency protection order against her son.
