A Grade 7 student from an Edmonton Catholic school will be suspended for five days after accidentally shooting his classmate with a pellet gun.
It happened at around 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Father Troy Catholic School.
“He decided to shoot the pellet gun, believing that the safety latch was on, and the safety latch wasn’t on and he hit another student,” Edmonton Catholic Schools spokesperson Lori Nagy said.
“The female student that was hit has quite a welt on her leg and she’ll be fine,” Nagy said.
An ambulance was called as a precaution.
“This is just a really good example of how something can go wrong, how accidents could be very serious and weapons can really hurt and injure people.
“We take all weapon complaints and incidents very seriously,” Nagy added, explaining that the student will be suspended and the school is recommending expulsion.
“Unfortunately a really good student made an unwise decision.”
Nagy stressed the district believes there was no intent behind the boy’s actions.
“We know that the student did not mean to hurt the other student,” she said. “He is very upset about it, but the fact is it is considered a weapon, he did bring it to school and now we have to take action.”
The Edmonton Police Service and Edmonton Catholic School District are investigating.
