TORONTO – A 38-year-old woman was killed and her 35-year-old sister taken to hospital after a vehicle mounted a sidewalk in downtown Toronto Tuesday.
Police say a Mercedes sport utility vehicle being driven by a 48-year-old woman was making a lane change when it mounted the curb at about 2:15 p.m. near the Rogers Centre on Bremner Blvd.
Images from the scene showed the vehicle on the sidewalk after going into a tented marketplace where the women were manning a booth.
Police say the victim was pronounced dead at the scene while her sister suffered minor injuries. The driver of the vehicle was taken to hospital to be treated for shock.
Const. High Smith said it was possible that the driver might have had a medical episode or hit the wrong pedal. No names have been released.
