1 killed, 19 injured after tour bus overturns near Mount Vernon estate

MOUNT VERNON, Va. — Police say a tour bus overturned near George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate after being involved in a crash with a passenger car, leaving one person dead and 19 injured.

U.S. Park Police spokeswoman Sgt. Anna Rose said that 19 people were taken to hospitals following the crash Tuesday afternoon; three of those suffered critical injuries. She says the person who died was a bus passenger.

In an email, Rose said the mid-sized shuttle bus was carrying 18 foreign tourists and the driver. The car had two occupants.

Police closed sections of the George Washington Memorial Parkway, which runs along the Potomac River between the nation’s capital and Mount Vernon.
