Some have given up their backyards and others their front yards all in the name of camping. And according to the city of Lethbridge, parking your RV or motor home on your property is completely legal.
“There are no rules in Lethbridge yet as to where you can park your RV on your property, ” said Dave Henley, a bylaw officer with the city of Lethbridge.
“If it’s on your property it has to be completely within your property and the hitch cannot hang over the sidewalk.”
Some homeowners will do anything to keep their RVs parked with in the guidelines, even if that means diminishing the curb appeal of their home.
But travel trailers and RVs can only be left “on-street” for up to 48 hours, then they have to be moved.
“They have to be completely removed from the area for 36 hours and then it can be re-parked. The rules are designed so that you can bring your RV home and get packed up and come back, unload it and move it back to where you are storing your RV,” he said.
Henley said parked RVs cannot block the view of intersections, crosswalks, playgrounds or signs.
“Tickets are $30 and that’s for a variety of different offences. You get an orange sticker on your trailer before you get a ticket. That’s saying you have 48 hours to move it,” Henley explained.
He also said it’s all complaint-based, so if you have concerns about trailers being left for extended periods of time on the roadway you can contact Lethbridge Regional Police.
