Trudeaus axe 1 taxpayer-funded nanny, will pay for new caregiver on own dime

The Trudeau family is saying goodbye to one of its publicly funded caregivers.

As of July 1, Marylou Trayvilla, “special assistant at the prime minister’s residence,” will no longer be on-staff for the family.

Justin Trudeau and Sophie Gregoire Trudeau plan to hire a new caregiver, to be paid for out of their own pocket, PMO spokesman Olivier Duchesneau said in an emailed statement to Global News.

The prime minister has previously come under fire for using taxpayer money for the nannies. On the campaign trail leading to last fall’s federal election, Trudeau pledged to “stop sending child benefit cheques to millionaires.” Trudeau takes home $340,800 per year for his role as prime minister.

Trayvilla’s tasks included performing duties around the house as well as helping with childcare. No reason was given for her departure.

The family’s caregivers are paid $15 to $20 an hour during the day and $11 to $13 an hour at night. The family’s other taxpayer-funded caregiver will remain.

The Trudeaus have three young children — Xavier, eight, Ella-Grace, seven, and Hadrien, two.

Gregoire Trudeau, who in the past has worked as a television host and yoga instructor, now spends her time supporting a number of charitable causes. She has become highly sought-after for public appearances for various charities and organizations, for which she is not paid.
