A streetside garden planted by Mayor John Tory last week in an effort to circumvent municipal red tape has been torn up, with plants apparently stolen.
Tory planted the flowers in the long-neglected planter beds at Yonge and Alexander streets Thursday, as part of his #GreaterTorontoDay pledge.
But by Monday the flower bed was completely torn up, and the planted flowers gone.
A Tory aide said Tuesday that city staff have since replaced the plants and that the local BIA has shown interest in maintaining the planter box.
Some on Facebook took umbrage with his planting the flowers on a day when police cracked down on marijuana dispensaries across the city.
“While your gardening your own plants for pleasure, you’re police force is raiding stores selling plants that have well documented health benefits!” one person wrote.
