Three cows died and several were left roaming a section of highway Monday night after a truck carrying cattle caught fire near New Maryland, New Brunswick.
The truck, which was carrying more than 40 cows and two horses, caught fire just before 6 p.m. while travelling on the Trans Canada Highway (TCH).
The driver pulled over and was able to free 11 of the cows. Three died as a result of the fire.
The other cows and horses remained in the carrier and weren’t harmed.
Cattle were seen roaming along the side of the highway, which was closed in both directions for about three hours.
Among those responding to the fire were Fredericton fire, a veterinarian and the Department of Agriculture.
It was determined that the fire originated from a wheel on the trailer. RCMP say no charges are expected to be laid.
