The U.K. event, which dates back hundreds of years, is an annual tradition that attracts people from all over the world.

“I take my holidays just to come here and I think it’s lovely because it’s been ten years since I’ve been hearing about this and watching the TV and now I’ve made my dream come true, you know what I mean?” Rodrigo Sanchez, one of the participants, told the Associated Press.

Thousands of people line the hill to watch the participants throwing themselves down the slope.

Cuts, grazes, nettle stings and sprains are common hazards.

“I’m too short to be afraid…and too young!” said Florence Early, the winner of the women’s downhill “race”.

“I’m really happy about today and two more years and I should have the record,” the male winner, Chris Anderson, added.
