Thousands of commuters across the Greater Toronto Area swapped their vehicles for bicycles on the launch of Bike to Work Day.
The event, which calls on residents from across Toronto to bike to work, coincides with Bike Month which runs until June 30.
Cycling advocates say riding on two wheels is cheaper than driving as bicycle maintenance can cost just $500 a year.
The health benefits of a daily ride from home to work and back is also cited as a reason to choose the alternative means of transportation.
On the same day as Bike to Work Day, Toronto police also launched a week-long bike lane enforcement campaign to make sure both motorists and cyclist obey proper road rules.
Police say its parking enforcement unit has issued more than 17,000 tickets for bicycle lane offences since 2014 when fines went up from $60 to $150.
