A gorilla at the Cincinnati Zoo had to be shot over the weekend after a child climbed into the enclosure.
The 4-year-old was in the enclosure for 10 minutes before the shot was determined necessary by zoo officials. Authorities said the child, who has not been identified, fell 10 to 12 feet after climbing through the enclosure’s fence.

Many are quick to point the blame at the child’s parents, calling for criminal charges. A petition titled Justice for Harambe gained over 58,000 signatures as of this morning.
The family of a the child released a statement Sunday saying he is home and doing fine. “We extend our heartfelt thanks for the quick action by the Cincinnati Zoo staff. We know that this was a very difficult decision for them, and that they are grieving the loss of their gorilla,” the family said.
