WINNIPEG — Over 1,400 motorcycle riders and enthusiasts descended on Polo Park to kick off Manitoba Motorcycle Ride for Dad, in an effort to raise awareness and donations to tackle prostate cancer.
Since 2009, Manitoba Motorcycle Ride for Dad has raised over $1.5 million dollars, with all proceeds going towards prostate cancer research and initiatives in the province. This year’s donations is a record, with over $330,000 raised.
“In just eight years, we have grown to become a consistent top two or three performer in terms of funds raised and total number of registered,” said Maurice Sabourin, co-chair of Manitoba Motorcycle Ride for Dad.
The Canadian Cancer Society estimates 24,000 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2015. It remains the third leading cause of death from cancer for Canadian men.
Several notable guests showed up, including former Winnipeg Blue Bombers Doug Brown, Obby Khan and Winnipeg Mayor Brian Bowman.
Ami Houde, one of the celebrity ride captains, and 11-time Manitoba motocross champion said she was thrilled to take part in her first Ride for Dad, alongside her father Kim and her grandfather.
“It’s our job as women to really enforce or guys get checked, to take care of our men, the men in our family,” said Houde.
Houde said she hoped the big turnout would increase awareness of men getting checkups for early detection.
