The west Lethbridge school is slated to open fall 2017 and, now that a name has been chosen, the work can get underway.

“Now we can move forward with the rest of the planning to get this school in place for the fall of 2017,” board chair Mich Forster said.

The school board wanted a name that spoke to the rich history of the City of Lethbridge, that was originally known as Coalbanks.

The area was heavily dominated by the presence of coal production, earning the moniker “Coal Banks.” It wasn’t until 1885, when the townsite was surveyed on the prairie level, that the name Lethbridge was formally adopted.

Coalbanks was chosen by the board of trustees through a selection process that considered public feedback through written submissions and an online form.
