Charges are pending against the driver of a car involved in a deadly crash in Strathcona County Friday evening.
RCMP said alcohol and speed are believed to be factors in the crash, which left a male cyclist dead.
Mounties said a car was heading east on Highway 14 when it collided with a man on a bicycle just east of Highway 216. According to police, the cyclist was trying to cross the highway.
The collision occurred at around 6:30 p.m.
When officers arrived, the cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the car was not injured.
Cst. Andrew Gildart with Strathcona County RCMP Traffic Services said unfortunately, some drivers continue to disobey the rules of the road.
“If people are going to have alcoholic beverages, enjoy them where they’re at, just don’t get behind the wheel and drive,” he said.
“We just want people to slow down, buckle up, put the cellphones away and don’t drink and drive. Pretty basic rules, but those are pretty major on highways.”

The eastbound lane of Highway 14 was closed for several hours just east of Highway 216 as officers investigated. The highway has since reopened.
