U of S researcher looking for connection between anti-depressants and Alzheimer’s

A researcher at the University of Saskatchewan is looking into the possibility that certain anti-depressant medications may increase the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

Doctor Darrell Mousseau, a professor of psychiatry, says certain drugs in a family of anti-depressants called SSRIs may be responsible for the creation of a sticky protein in the brain.

Mousseau’s five-year project got underway almost two years ago and is being funded through the Alzheimer’s Society of Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation.
