WINNIPEG — The Canadian Safe Boating Council is making sure we are safe on the water this May Long Weekend.

Thursday morning at 11:30 a.m. the council and Lifesaving Society of Manitoba will kick off safe boating awareness week at the Forks.

The Victoria Day long weekend for many is the unofficial start to summer and the goal of the week is to decrease the number of boating fatalities and educating the public before boating season begins.

On Thursday the Lifesaving Society, Canadian Safe Boating Council, the Winnipeg Police Service, Stearns, and members of the Manitoba Coalition for Safer Waters will stage a number of unique interactive stations for media to experience the essentials of boating safety. The list includes the following.

  1. Selecting & Fitting Lifejackets – Lifesaving Society / CSBC/ Stearns
  2. The dangers of Alcohol and Boating – Winnipeg Police Service
  3. Be Prepared, and improving your boating skills – Lifesaving Society
  4. Ensuring that boaters and boats are prepared before departure – Lifesaving Society
  5. Dangers of Cold Water Immersion − Manitoba Coalition for Safer Waters
