Grande Prairie condo fire causes ‘substantial’ damage

EDMONTON – Several Grande Prairie residents were forced from their homes Friday as fire tore through the Haywood Court condominiums.

Crews were called to the fire around 5:30 p, m., said platoon chief Bart Johnson.

Getting the fire under control took several hours, however, as the fire, which initially started on the building’s exterior, travelled inside, making it difficult for crews to reach the flames.

No injuries had been reported, Johnson said.

About 10 units in the building at 72nd Avenue and Poplar Drive were affected, Johnson said.

The cause of the fire has not been determined, and a damage estimate has yet to be made, though Johnson said the damage was “substantial.”

Residents have not been allowed back into the building.
