REGINA – The empty 17.5 acre rail yard site in Regina’s warehouse district currently sits empty but three new conceptual plans have been released for the site’s future.
The three plans each focus on various aspects including residential, retail, and new public facilities.
“We’re likely not going to just pick one, the intent is to bring the best from all of them into a new one,” City of Regina Major Projects Director Kelly Scherr said.
The site could one day see up to 3,000 residents living in the new community.
The city says all plans include a bridge connection to downtown, which is positive news for those in the in the warehouse district.
“We would like to make sure that its active 24/7 and that it adds feet and eyes on the street,” Warehouse Business Improvement District (BID) executive director Sandy Doran said.
Doran adds that the district is home to Regina’s original downtown and it is important that the community’s built-form is respected and any new housing is high-density.
“Keeping that flavour of the area and keeping that whole flow in it, I think that’s a really important piece of it.”
“This will be a neighbourhood a little unlike what we’ve done in Regina. It’s a little more denser, and a little more urban,” Scherr explained.
The city says they will be accepting the public’s input over the next two weeks before presenting council with their final recommendation in the fall.
