It’s our city’s second largest parade, after the Calgary Stampede. Thousands of people took to the streets in the communities of Martindale and Castleridge Saturday as Calgary Sikhs celebrated Vaisakhi.
Vaisakhi is a Sikh festival that celebrates equality, freedom and justice for all.
It began and ended at the Dashmesh Cultural Centre, where a colorful display of religion, history, music and traditional martial arts were found.
There was free food and Indian sweets to sample as well.
The event also supports the 11th annual ‘Walking Away Hunger’ campaign to raise food and funds for the Calgary Food Bank.
Nagar Kirtan is celebrated by Sikhs around the world and is a way of bringing the message of God to the neighbourhood.
