The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) has confirmed they responded to two separate grass fires in the city of Calgary Saturday.
Global News first started getting reports of a grass fire in the northwest community of Scenic Acres around 1:15 p.m. MT.
The CFD said the northwest fire was smaller, but it was in the bottom of a ravine which made it difficult to access. Crews were able to extinguish that fire.
Shortly after 2 p.m. Global News received reports of a second grass fire in the southwest community of Westhills.
A spokesperson from the fire department said the southwest fire was substantial in size but crews were able to put it out.
Some residents in a nearby condo building self-evacuated due to the smoke in the area.
A province-wide fire ban was issued Thursday due to the incredibly dry conditions. Calgary, Chestermere and Red Deer remain under a fire advisory instead.
The City of Calgary chose to go with a fire safety advisory versus a ban on Tuesday. Calgary Fire Department Chief Steve Dongworth said the concern in the city is related to careless disposal of cigarettes versus backyard fire pits.
Fish Creek Provincial Park does have a fire ban in place because it falls under provincial jurisdiction.
