Officials warned late Tuesday that “the worst of the fire is not over” and that homes are still at risk.

“Basically the fire behaviour was beyond all control efforts,” Alberta Forestry spokesperson Bernie Schmitte said.

Officials warned that Wednesday is “expected to be a more intense burning day,” because of high winds and dry conditions.

Photos shared on social media show a nightmarish scene as evacuees made harrowing escapes from their homes.
