Kenya’s Daniel Kipkoech won the men’s category of the 2016 BMO Vancouver Marathon with a time of 2 hours 21 minutes and 4 seconds. He beat second-place finisher Habteselassa Lemma Gemechu of Ethiopia by more than two minutes.
Kipkoech finished in second place at last year’s BMO Vancouver Marathon.
B.C.’s Ryan Day placed third with a time of 2:36:44.
American Hirut Guangul won the women’s category with a time of 2:39:52. Allison Macsas, also of the U.S., finished second with a time of 2:42:07 while North Vancouver’s Ellie Greenwood finished third with 2:45:21.
A record 16,500 runners from 60 countries took part in the marathon, which included a full 26.2-mile race, a half-marathon, an eight-kilometre race and a team relay.
The full marathon route stretches through some of the most scenic parts of the city, starting in Queen Elizabeth Park and ending in Stanley Park.
