Many Albertans have been forced to consider career changes during this economic downturn.
And with that in mind, a not-for-profit group that brings businesses and job seekers together is holding career information sessions in Calgary this week.
The first was on Wednesday, and it gave participants an overview of careers that are available in less-traditional sectors – like biotech, supply chain management and logistics, and horticulture.
“It’s not a career fair,” Nicole Jelley, Executive Director at The Talent Pool, said.
“We don’t encourage you to come with a resume. It’s about human-forming yourself – ‘how can I transfer my skills, my knowledge, my experience, to an entirely different sector?'”
Adaez Conte, an unemployed geologist, is willing to consider just about anything. She said she found the first session informative.
“A lot of things that I didn’t know about some industries – horticultural, bio technology, supply chain – I got to know them now,” Adaeze said.
Sean Baker, a recruiter in the supply chain industry, told participants Calgary is a major hub, which bodes well for future job growth.
“We’re here to talk about how supply chain is growing in our region, how Calgary and Rocky View are booming,” Baker said.
A second information session containing more industry-specific details about skill requirements is scheduled for Thursday.
