Uber driver charged after allegedly sexually assaulting female passenger in Markham

A 30-year-old Uber driver has been charged with sexual assault after police say a late-night female passenger was picked up and driven to a Markham parking lot where she was attacked.

York Regional Police say the incident happened between midnight and 1 a.m. on Tuesday after the woman booked a ride to her home in the area of Yonge Street and Major Mackenzie Drive in Richmond Hill.

Police say the woman was picked up and driven to a parking lot near 16th Avenue and Woodbine Avenue when she was sexually assaulted.

The suspect has been identified as Ahmadfayim Bayat of Toronto and has been charged one count of sexual assault.

The accused is scheduled to appear in court for a bail hearing on Wednesday.

Police say Uber Canada is cooperating with the investigation.
