The next time the Shrine Circus arrives in communities around Saskatchewan, there will be no elephants or other exotic animals under the big top. The show will go on, but mainly with human performers and horses.
“We’ve been getting animal rights advocates coming out to our performances for about the last five years, being very nice about it,” said Stuart Larson, WA WA Shrine Circus event chairman.
In recent years, the Shriners had logistical challenges getting exotic animals into the province. Combined with mounting pressure from animal rights advocates, organizers decided to change the circus.

The new show, named Ma’Ceo, is similar to a Cirque du Soleil performance, Larson said.
Acrobats, dancers and comedians will be included. There will be no exotic animals.
“It’s very theatrical with lighting and music – lots of action,” Larson said.
June shows have been scheduled for Saskatoon, Regina, Estevan, Melville and North Battleford.
The Shrine Circus raises money for the 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children in North America, including one in Canada.
