Montreal – Voters in Montreal North headed to the polls Sunday to elect a new mayor for the borough.
Christine Black from Team Denis Coderre won the byelection with over 68 per cent of the votes.
Black will be taking over the position from interim mayor Chantal Rossi.
The byelection was called when former mayor Gilles Deguire resigned Jan. 7 after it became apparent he was the subject of a criminal investigation.

Deguire was later arraigned in court on charges of sexual assault and sexual touching of a minor.
Preliminary results posted by Election Montreal, showed that Black’s closest competitor was Projet Montreal’s Kerlande Mibel who garnered 23,11 per cent of the vote.
The two independent candidates, Jacques Massicotte and Rached Teffaha, accounted for less than 10 per cent of the total votes.
A total of 11,212 people cast a ballot in Sunday’s byelection, representing just over 20 per cent of registered voters.
