MONTREAL – A 21-year-old man is dead following a single-vehicle collision on Highway 13 in Montreal’s Lachine borough Saturday morning.
The man was heading south on Highway 13 when he lost control of his vehicle on the exit ramp to Highway 20 East.
Sgt. Claude Denis with the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), said the driver was partially ejected from his vehicle and died instantly. Denis said he was not wearing a seatbelt.
While alcohol was not a factor in the crash, speed and driver fatigue have yet to be ruled out.
Denis said the tragic outcome serves as a reminder to always wear a seatbelt.
“He maybe could have survived,” Denis said. ” The car wasn’t that heavily damaged.”
The SQ estimates that 40 deaths annually and 95 serious injuries could be avoided in Quebec if people always used seatbelts.
“Wearing a seatbelt cuts in half the risk of dying or sustaining serious injuries,” Denis said.
