Federal Health Minister Jane Philpott announced on April 20 that the legislation to legalize marijuana in Canada will be introduced in the spring of 2017.
Philpott said that Canada’s plan on pot is to remove marijuana consumption and incidental possession from the Criminal Code.

“We know it is impossible to arrest our way out of this problem,” Jane Philpott told the United Nations General Assembly Special Session on drugs on Wednesday morning.
This announcement happened to fall on the counterculture holiday devoted to smoking marijuana, 4/20.
She clarified that,
“We will introduce legislation in spring 2017 that ensures we keep marijuana out of the hands of children and profits out of the hands of criminals.”
