Concerns grow about venues as Olympics in Rio de Janeiro draws near

LAUSANNE, Switzerland – International sports federations have been told of problems with venues for the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, including power failures at the gymnastics arena this week.

Members of the Association of Olympic International Sports Federations are reviewing preparations for the Rio Games, which open in less than four months on Aug. 5.

ASOIF President Francesco Ricci Bitti says Rio organizers are missing out on “some very important details in each field of play.”

The gymnastics federation, known as FIG, complained of power outages at a test event Monday night at Rio Olympic Arena. FIG also cited problems with the scoring system and missing equipment at a temporary training venue.

Ricci Bitti says IOC President Thomas Bach “is worried like you, like me” about details for Rio.

Two top IOC officials will travel to Rio soon to work permanently on preparations.
