Toronto police say a body found in a fire pit at a North York park may have been burned to conceal the victim’s identity.
Police received a call around 10 a.m. Saturday about a fire in Northwood Park near Sheppard Avenue and Sentinel Road.
When officers arrived, they discovered the body of an unidentified man in a fire pit.
“He is Caucasian or light-skinned. We believe he is between the ages of 20 and 35 and has short black hair,” said Det. Shannon Dawson.
Investigators say they are focused on trying to identify the deceased.
“We do not have anyone who has been reported missing right now that we believe to be the person,” said Dawson.
On Monday, Det.-Sgt. Kevin Leahy told Global News that he believed the man was targeted and his body was burned as a way to cover up his identity.
Police are asking anyone who may have security video near or around the park to come forward.
