That escalated quickly: Flyers fans thrown from malfunctioning arena escalator

A malfunctioning escalator is being blamed for a chaotic scene at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, that caused a giant pileup of Flyers fans after a game on Saturday.

Cellphone video recorded the unusual incident following the team’s 3-2 win over the Ottawa Senators.

Fans are seen crashing into one another as the fast moving escalator pushed fans towards the pile of bodies.

One fan is seen bailing over the escalator railing before plowing into the crush of people.

Meghan McGreevy, the woman who recorded the video, told NBC News the escalator sped up without notice.

“We heard the escalator rev up a little bit. It started going faster and faster,” McGreevy said. “People couldn’t get out of the way fast enough.”

There were no reports of injuries.

Collin Mehalick, an editor with Broad Street Hockey was at the game and reported seeing some elderly fans being taken away in wheelchairs.

The escalators were immediately closed to fans, and remained out of service when NBA fans arrived at the arena later on Saturday to watch the Philadelphia 76ers host the Indiana Pacers.

“Immediately following Saturday’s game an incident did occur involving one of our escalators,” said Ike Richman, a spokesperson for Comcast Spectator.

“We immediately closed it down to protect our patrons and notified the operator,” Richman said. “We are working with the operator on investigating this incident.”

Fans who witnessed the bizarre incident turned to social media.
