Environment Canada issued special weather statements for several regions across southern Ontario.

Parts of the Greater Toronto Area — including Burlington, Oakville and Milton — are expecting 10 to 15 centimetres of snow Sunday night before it tapers off in the morning.

OPP respond to dozens of crashes

Toronto Transportation Services already began its week-long winter maintenance program on Friday.

WATCH: Toronto can expect approximately five to 10 cm of snow Sunday and moving into the Monday morning commute. Erica Vella explains when spring will finally arrive and when the snow will be gone for good.

Salting crews have been targeting main roads and expressways, but snow squalls caused dozens of collisions and rollovers on highways just north of the city.

Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said there were about 30 crashes across the GTA Saturday night.

Salters working day and night

Toronto’s manager of road operations, Hector Morano, said the whole squad of expressway salters and all 18 anti-icing units will be working day and night.

“Of course Toronto rush hour traffic is busy as it is, and any time you have any wintry event, it certainly puts a lot more pressure on the roads,” said Morano.

He asked motorists to be patient and to plan for delays heading into the Monday rush hour, as a round of salting could take two and a half to three hours to complete.
