Fire damages two homes in Calgary’s Monterey Park neighbourhood

Two homes were severely damaged by fire in the northeast community of Monterey Park Friday afternoon.

Fire crews responded to the fire at about 1:30 p.m.

When they arrived, two homes on Del Ray Road N.E. were fully involved with fire with flames shooting through the roofs.

The fire department said the fire was so intense crews were initially unable to perform a primary search of the houses.

But once the fire was brought under control they were able to search the homes and found no one inside.

The fire department said occupants of the house where the fire started were home at the time and smelled smoke.

They got out safely, although one man suffered minor burns to his hands.

He was assessed and treated by paramedics but did not require hospitalization.

Fire fighters were able to determine that six people who live in the second house involved were not home when the fire broke out.

Damage to both houses is extensive.  Three vehicles were destroyed in the fire. There’s also some siding damage to a third home.

A total of 15 people are displaced.

The cause of the fire has not been determined yet.

Access to a portion of Del Ray Road was restricted while fire crews remain on scene.
