Police are continuing to investigate an accident in East Vancouver that claimed the life of a 31-year-old pedestrian this morning.
Just before 9:30 a.m., a woman crossing East Broadway at Rupert Street was struck by a dump truck that was pulling a trailer. VPD Cst. Brian Montague said the woman is believed to be a resident of Vancouver and the driver of the truck stayed at the scene and cooperated with police.
Traffic in the area was diverted from the intersection while police investigated. Montague said the pedestrian was in the crosswalk on the roadway when she was struck, but it is currently not known what the traffic signals were doing at the time. Drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the accident.
Officers with the VPD Collision Investigations Unit will continue to investigate the scene and speak to witnesses.
This is Vancouver’s sixth traffic fatality in 2016 and five of those have been pedestrians.
Traffic in the area is expected to be disrupted for several hours and police are asking motorists to find alternative routes.
