CALGARY – A table hockey game with real ice, an underwater robot and a deconstructed computer – they were just some of the projects Schulich School of Engineering students have designed and built as final-year projects.
They were on display at the Olympic Oval Wednesday.
The students worked in multi-disciplinary teams, and started working on their projects last fall.
In many cases they were sponsored by local companies and organizations.
The Capstone Design course is mandatory for most fourth-year engineering students at the University of Calgary.
It gives them an opportunity to apply their technical knowledge to real-life problems.
“You could say reality is grading the students, as opposed to us.. they’re being challenged all the time by the real world, and that’s a very valuable and rich learning experience for the students,” said Ron Hugo, Associate Dean at the Schulich School of Engineering.
In past years some of the more innovative prototypes created by engineering students have undergone further development after they graduated.
