Saskatoon police officer enters river to rescue woman

SASKATOON – A police officer entered the icy South Saskatchewan River Wednesday to rescue a woman. Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) officials say the woman jumped over the side of a walkway on the Sid Buckwold Bridge.

At around 2:40 p.m. CT, a patrol member spotted her on the pedestrian walkway of the bridge. Police say she jumped into the river when the patrol officer approached her.

One officer, with help from a member of the traffic unit, was secured by a rope and waded into the water from the north side of the riverbank to rescue the woman.

Police say she was conscious and alert when paramedics took her hospital for treatment. The woman appeared to be in her early to mid 20s.

The officer was not injured.

SPS are thanking a member of the public for assisting the officer who went into the river.
