LAVINGTON — Investigators are trying to determine the cause of a fire at a controversial pellet plant in Lavington.
The fire started inside a dryer Tuesday afternoon.
“No one was hurt and the fire was brought under control with the assistance of emergency response personnel,” says Leroy Reistma of Pinnacle Renewable Energy.
“The plant was not in regular operation at the time of the event which occurred immediately following a day of maintenance procedures.”
The plant is a $47 million investment in partnership with Tolko Industries and Pinnacle Renewable Energy.
Some Lavington residents have spoken out against the location of the plant and the emissions it produces.
They say the plant is located near an elementary school.
Both Pinnacle Renewable Energy and the Ministry of Environment have argued the project will actually improve local air quality because of upgrades to the nearby Tolko mill that are tied in to the project.
The plant opened last September.
