Alberta finance minister promises reduced deficits in April 14 budget

EDMONTON – Alberta Finance Minister Joe Ceci says while he still doesn’t have a revised date to balance the budget, the next three budgets will have smaller and smaller deficits.

Ceci says while the overall goal remains getting out of the red, it’s difficult with oil prices remaining low.

He promises there will be reductions in spending growth over the next three budgets as well.

Ceci will present his next budget on April 14.

He announced last month that the 2016-17 deficit will now be more than $10 billion — double what was previously expected.

At the same time he said the province would not achieve its target to balance the budget by 2020, and couldn’t say what the new target date would be.
