DOLBEAU-MISTASSINI, Qc – Quebec City Police have taken over an investigation after a man was injured in a shooting involving Sûreté du Québec (SQ) officers.
According to Quebec City police (SPVQ) spokesperson Marie-Eve Painchaud, the incident happened Saturday morning in Dolbeau-Mistassini in the Lac-Saint-Jean region.
Officers responding to a break-and-enter call surprised the individual in a car on Saint-Jean Road. The man, who was allegedly carrying a weapon, fled the scene leading police on a chase.
Shots were fired during the pursuit and the suspect was wounded.
He was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
SPVQ officers took over the investigation Saturday afternoon, as per protocol.
An independent investigation is launched by Quebec’s Public Security Ministry whenever a person dies or is injured during police intervention.
It is the second such incident to occur in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region in the last 24 hours.
On Friday, officers with Saguenay police killed a man in distress who was threatening them with an edge weapon.
