KELOWNA — All eyes are on a family of five Great Horned owls who’ve settled in a tree in downtown Kelowna.
Feathers, a partially eaten bird, and a rat tail lay at the bottom of a tree behind the Law Courts. It’s evidence of the new family in town. The mom, dad, and three fledglings are perched in relatively plain sight, next to a busy walkway. As a result, passersby are stopping to catch a glimpse of the normally elusive birds. Photo enthusiasts are taking advantage of the urban owls, with a steady stream of photographers congregating under the tree every day.
“It’s cool that they’re right here in Kelowna,” said one spectator.
It’s unclear when exactly the owls arrived, or if they plan on leaving anytime soon. Typically, Great Horned owls don’t migrate, and will occupy the same territory year-round.
