130-year-old Gas Works building collapses in New Westminster

The oldest industrial building in New Westminster collapsed this afternoon.

The roof of the abandoned Gas Works building caved in suddenly around 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Fire and ambulance crews have been on scene since, but there are no reports of any injuries.

The facility was built in 1886 to covert coal and coal tar into usable energy for New Westminster, but the site at 12th Street and 3rd Avenue has sat vacant for decades due to contamination.

The large lot is owned by the provincial government, but has sat in limbo due to the high costs of cleaning and redeveloping the land.
