KELOWNA – A driver who may have dozed off was sentenced to jail Friday for causing a fatal highway crash.
The head-on collision happened in August 2014 on Highway 97 just north of the Kelowna airport.
Seth Wing’s southbound pickup truck gradually veered into the oncoming lane striking a sedan.
Eva Mason, a Manitoba resident, died at the scene. Her husband suffered serious head injuries.
After pleading guilty to driving without due care and attention, Wing was handed a one month jail term, a 30 day driving prohibition and must pay a $150 victim surcharge fee.
The judge commented on Wing’s horrible driving record as a factor in the sentencing.
A witness in a passing vehicle told police Wing may have fallen asleep. At the time, RCMP said excessive speed also may have played a role.
Wing, 34, apologized to Mason’s family in court but the victim’s husband says the death of his wife “still hurts and always will.”
