Volunteers with Nanaimo Search and Rescue (NSAR) braved the torrential rain and windstorm Wednesday night to find two hikers that were lost on Mount Benson.
At approximately 4:30 p.m. NSAR were alerted that two female hikers, ages 16 and 25, had lost their way coming back from a day hike on the mountain. The hikers were able to provide their location using the GPS on their cell phone, according to Nanaimo RCMP.

The pair were not dressed for the weather and unprepared to start a fire. RMCP advised them to stay put and wait for the NSAR team.
The extremely wet and tired hikers were located at around 7:30 p.m. Grateful to the search and rescue team, they were safely escorted back to their vehicle.
“The conditions could not have been worse but without hesitation, these volunteers set off to do what they are trained to do and successfully carried out their duties,” said Cst. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP in a release. “This is just another classic example of the dedication and commitment [search and rescue] provides on any given day, regardless of the circumstances.”
