CALGARY – Police and emergency crews were called to the scene of serious single vehicle crash on Highway 1 and Old Banff Coach Road Sunday at around 11:30 a.m.

An SUV travelling eastbound on Highway 1 carrying four people and the family dog, left the road and crashed into a ditch, rolling several times and crossing an access road before coming to a stop.

All four family members were taken to hospital. A 7 month old girl that was in a rear facing car carrier, was taken to the Alberta Children’s Hospital in serious, but stable condition and a 4-year-old boy in stable, non-life threatening condition. A woman in her mid 30s, the mother who was sitting in the front passenger seat, was taken to hospital in serious but stable condition. The father and driver, is also in serious but stable condition.

Witnesses told paramedics the eastbound SUV had lost control in the southbound exit lane from Highway 1 to Old Banff Coach Road and had come to a stop in the embankment near the curve lanes.

EMS said there was substantial front end damage to the SUV. Using a total of five ambulances.

Police have not released any further information about the family dog.

Traffic in both directions was backed up for roughly an hour due to lane closures and both highways have since reopened both highways as of 12:30 p.m.

Police have not confirmed what caused the crash.
