Neil Laughton and James Bingham were attempting to cross-country ski and kayak across the sea ice from Wales to Little Diomede on Thursday.

But the ice was reportedly too thin to walk on and too thick to continue in kayaks, leaving the pair stranded.

They were eventually winched to safety by U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak aircrews.

Laughton and Bingham, along with other adventurers, are planning a full crossing of the Bering Strait from Russia to the U.S. in March 2017.
