TORONTO — Nearly 250 flights in and out of Toronto Pearson International Airport were cancelled Wednesday morning as a result of the weather condition caused by a major winter storm in southern Ontario.
As of 7 a.m. ET. Wednesday, 165 arrivals and 81 departures were cancelled which made up close to one third of all flights.
By 3:45 p.m., 173 out of a total of 746 arriving flights and 93 out of a total of 736 departing flights had been cancelled. That number totalled about 23 per cent of arrivals and 12 per cent of departures on Wednesday.
Travellers were advised to check their flight status prior to arriving to the terminal.
The number of cancelled flights for some of the specific airlines since 7 a.m. were as follows:
- Air Canada — Eight flights cancelled.
- West Jet — 12 flights cancelled.
- Air Transat — Three flights delayed, no cancellations.
- American Airlines — Seven flights cancelled.
- British Airways — Six flights delayed, one cancelled.
The airport could not provide the specific number of travellers affected by the cancellations,.
Environment Canada ended a winter storm warning for the City of Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area on Wednesday.
Tuesday’s weather system brought between 15 to 25 centimetres of snow in the GTA causing slick driving conditions for motorists.

A number of collisions have been reported across major highways and arterial roads.
In Toronto, a transit bus collided with a car around 4 a.m. ET in the west-end of the city.
Several passengers were on board but there’s no word on any injuries.
Some public transportation services have also been altered due to the storm.
GO Transit has revised its schedule in order to help deal with the accumulation of snow.

Many school boards across the Greater Toronto Area also cancelled school bus service due to the road conditions.
The weather also forced several of schools in southern Ontario to close for the day, although most remained open.
